Why Local Links Matter More Than Volume

A national content site needs thousands of backlinks to compete. A contractor website in a metro area needs twenty good ones.

The difference: local relevance. Google understands geography. A link from your city's Chamber of Commerce says "this is a real business operating in this place." That signal is worth more than a hundred links from generic directories in countries where you don't work.

For AI search — ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity — the same principle applies. When the model is building an answer to "best roofing contractor in [city]," it's drawing on a web of citations, links, and mentions. A contractor with a well-linked local presence gets named. One that exists only on their own website doesn't.

Many municipalities maintain local business directories. Search "[your city] business directory" and "[your county] local business listings." These are usually free to submit to. Some require a business license number to verify you're local.

3. Local News Mentions

A quote in your local newspaper or an appearance in a neighborhood Facebook group recap article is a link you didn't have to ask for. Make it easier to happen: when you do something notable (donate to a school fundraiser, sponsor a little league team, finish a landmark project), send a one-paragraph pitch to your local paper's business desk. Most local reporters are looking for easy story material.

4. Sponsorships

Little league teams, 5K races, school events — they publish sponsor lists online. These pages get linked from the organization's main site and often from local news coverage of the event. A $200 sponsorship that appears on three different pages is a better link investment than any paid backlink package.

5. Supplier and Manufacturer Directories

If you're a certified installer for any brand — roofing, windows, HVAC systems, flooring — check if that manufacturer maintains a contractor finder. Email their marketing or support team and ask to be added. These are industry-relevant links on high-authority domains.

6. Industry Associations

Your state contractor licensing board, trade associations, and local chapter affiliations often have member directories. NARI, NAHB, PHCC, ACCA — if you're a member, confirm your listing exists and has a website link.

7. Neighboring Business Referral Pages

Some businesses build explicit referral pages: "Trusted local vendors we send our clients to." Real estate agents, interior designers, and property managers often maintain these. If you've worked with any of them, ask if they have a preferred vendor list and whether you can be on it.

8. Local Blogs and "Best Of" Lists

Search "[your city] best [contractor type]" and "[your city] [service] guide." Local lifestyle blogs and neighborhood sites publish these lists regularly. If you're not on a relevant list, reach out to the author. Most are responsive to a short, professional pitch — especially if you've done work in their neighborhood.

The ask is simple. Email or LinkedIn message, three sentences:

Hi [name], I'm [name] with [business], a [service] contractor based in [city]. I noticed you maintain a local vendor directory — I'd love to be considered for a listing. Here's our website: [URL]. Happy to provide license number, insurance cert, or any other info you need.

That's it. No pitch deck. No credentials section. Most local link opportunities require nothing more than asking.

Before you pursue backlinks, your citation profile needs to be clean. If your business name, address, or phone number doesn't match across your top 12 directories, fixing that comes before anything else.
